When designing a house or commercial structure, the R-value of the insulation must be analyzed to ensure that the building envelope is airtight and water tight. Convective heat transfer and condensation are factors to be considered in the modeling process. R-value is a measurement of the resistance to conducted and radiant heat.
The Edit Insulation panel allows you to view the default insulation data provided with AFT Fathom and add, edit or delete user defined insulation materials. When adding an insulation material to AFT Fathom, the physical properties must be entered in the Insulation Physical Properties window.
A number of insulating materials are available, including fiberglass batts and rolls, rock wool (man-made from basalt or diabase), mineral wool (made from recycled steel mill slag), and cellulose. Cellulose is a fibrous material made from shredded newspaper and treated with chemicals to make it fire retardant. The treated paper also resists mold, insects, and rodents. It is a great choice for homes in northern climates, where it can be installed over a moisture-permeable exterior sheathing such as one-by lumber or asphalt-impregnated fiberboard or an exterior gypsum board.
